3 Things to Love about Bicycling that Don’t Get Enough Attention

We’ve written about bicycling a few times on here already. And we’ve covered some of its main benefits. For example:

  1. Bicycling is the most efficient mode of transport.
  2. Bicycling is good for your health (and bicyclists live longer, on average).
  3. Bicycling can save you a ton of cash.

Well, those are some pretty convincing reasons to get on a bike, but I think there are a few more that may be as important to people but are not very quantifiable and, thus, often overlooked…

#1 Bicycling lets you (or even encourages you to) smell the roses. Seriously, on a bike, you notice the roses, and you can easily stop to smell them. And, more directly speaking to the underlying message of that old piece of advice, bicycling allows you to (even makes you, I would contend) step back, relax, and pay more attention to the pleasant little things in life. It’s counter to this whole “move as fast as you can” and “consume as much as you can” attitude that is far too predominant in modern life.

#2 Bicycling is cool. I imagine some people still don’t think so, but it seems common knowledge these days that bicycling is downright hip these days. Hop on a bike and “strut your stuff.”

#3 Bicycling re-instills a feeling of youth in you. Learning to bike is a huge milestone in many people’s childhood. It provides a sense of freedom and independence. It’s also a ton of fun. Coming back to bicycling as an adult brings many people back to those feelings, I think, and provides a sort of freedom from the trappings (or difficulties) of adult life. Tag this onto all those benefits above and I think it’s pretty easy to see why people who come back to bicycling as adults often become quite passionate about it.
